Chana / Bengal Gram

What are Pulses ?
Pulses are also known as legumes or lentils. Pulses are seeds from the legume plant family and lentils are a pulse. Legumes (beans) are among the oldest cultivated plants. In fact, fossil records demonstrate that prehistoric people domesticated and cultivated legumes for food. Today, this extremely large category of vegetables contains over 13,000 species and is second only to grains in supplying calories and protein to the world's population. Compared to grains, legumes supply about the same number of total calories, but usually provide 2-to-4 times as much protein. Legumes are often called "the poor people's meat," however, they might be better known as the "healthy people's meat." Pulses refer mainly to the dry seeds that are harvested from the legume plant family. There are various types of pulses which differ in colour, shape, size and taste. Pulses are important food crops due to their high protein and essential amino acid content. Like many leguminous crops, pulses play a key role in crop rotation due to their ability to fix nitrogen.
Where are Pulses Grown?
Pulses are commonly known as Dal in India. The world’s largest producer and consumer for pulses is India. India being the largest producer of grain legumes grows a total production varying between 12.0 and 14.0 million metric tonnes (MMT) in recent years. The major pulses that are grown and harvested are Pigeon peas (Arhar) and Tyson chickpeas (Gram or Desi Chana). Their share in the total pulses production is about 21% and 33% respectively. Few other countries do grow pulses but cannot compete with the high volumes and quality of grain pulses grown in India. While Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat account for a major share in the production, small quantities are also cultivated in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Kamataka, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and Bihar.
